MONROVIA (AFP) – The Liberian football association LFA said Tuesday it has suspended all activities in the country as a measure to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
LFA had decided “to cease operations of football activities considering that football matches are contact sports and Ebola is spread through body contacts with an infected person,” LFA chief Musa Bility said in a statement.
Meanwhile the finance ministry in Liberia, where 127 people have died of the disease, said it had placed several senior officials under observation for three weeks after a top ministry official died from the virus.
Patrick Sawyer was on official business in Nigeria last week when he contracted the disease.
“All senior officials coming in direct or indirect contact with Mr Sawyer have been placed on the prescribed 21 days observatory surveillance,” the ministry said in a statement.
Since March, there have been 1,201 cases of Ebola and 672 deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Ebola can fell victims within days, causing severe fever and muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in some cases, organ failure and unstoppable bleeding.

Emir of Kano, Sanusi, visits Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan and a former Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi, on Wednesday met for the first time since he (Sanusi) became the Emir of Kano.
The former CBN boss was one of the northern traditional rulers who joined Jonathan in the Presidential Villa, Abuja for the breaking of Ramadan fast.
The traditional rulers were led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III.
Sanusi led others in a special prayer for peace during the short event held inside the President’s residence.
Jonathan later took turn to shake hands with all the traditional rulers in attendance, including Sanusi to the admiration of his aides.
Abubakar, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, condemned the twin blasts recorded in Kaduna earlier in the day as well as other acts of violence across the country.
While describing the perpetrators as enemies of humanity, he insisted that they and their sponsors had no Islamic agenda.
He requested that the President should grant the traditional rulers an audience in the nearest future in order to discuss issues of national importance.
The President granted the request immediately.
In his short remarks, Jonathan urged the traditional rulers to join hands with his administration to end insurgency.
“It could have been worse than this if not for prayers. We will surely get over it. We are doing our best to ensure we end this situation and with the support of Nigerians, we shall surely overcome,” he said.

Impeachment: Three suspended Ebonyi Assembly members recalled BY PETER OKUTU
ABAKALIKI- THE embattled Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Chukwuma Nwazunku this morning disclosed that the House yesterday recalled the three members who were suspended before it went on recess last Thursday.
The members were: Hon Eni Uduma Chima representing Afikpo South West, Hon Frank Onwe representing Ohaukwu North and Hon. Blaise Orji.

Briefing newsmen at his residence in Abakaliki, Nwazunku stated that the matter had been fully resolved internally.
He called on the aggrieved members to sheath their sword for peace to reign in the state.
Meanwhile, in a dramatic circumstance this morning also, the member representing Ohaozara East state constituency, Hon. Nnenna Nweme who alleged that she was attacked by thugs loyal to Nwazunku reversed her earlier claim.
According to her: “I was not attacked by the Speaker’s men. I was rather deceived by the other group to stand against Nwazunku. I am now with Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunka. He is a good man and I am with him”.

“Missing” oil revenue: Between Emir Sanusi and Senate?
WHEN the mouth of the former Central Bank Governor, and now Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was running riot, and the ever busy bees of the opposition trumpeted his lies about missing oil funds, many Nigerians, so used to the corruption of top government officials in times past and present, were aghast and lent their voice to the debate for and against the bogus claim.
But, today, courtesy of the Senate of the Federal Republic, we now know that the man who headed our bank of banks was a liar of the first order.
Thank God, he has been removed from his central position in Abuja to become a local champion in Kano. The pity will be for the Kanawas who have to contend with a mischievous monarch who will do anything, including lying publicly, to save his skin. It is clearly what a traditional ruler should be that the good (and of course, bad) people of Kano have to live with for the number of years Allah will grant him on the throne.
A fearful Sanusi, whose neck was on the line for the way he managed the resources of the CBN, had cleverly put the President’s back to the wall when he wrote to Goodluck Jonathan on the non-remittance to the Federation Account by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, of $49.8billion, representing 76 per cent of the value of crude oil lifting from January 2012 to July 2013.
The letter, which political strategists expected to undo the ruling government, had been leaked to the press. But after a presidentially ordered reconciliation, the Emir, looking like a cock thoroughly beaten by heavy downpour, retraced his steps and agreed that the figure was over $12 billion, which revised again downward to $10.8 billion and later (finally) to $20 billion.
In putting a lie to the irresponsible letter of the Emir of Kano, the Senate Committee on Finance, headed by former Kaduna Governor, Ahmed Makarfi, declared that “there was never any unremitted $49.8 billion….The committee could not see how the figure of $49.8 billion was arrived at by the CBN governor in the first instance.”
One Senator, Ayogu Eze, commended the committee for the professional work it did, applauding it for hiring professional auditors who made it possible to have the job of investigation to be well done. He said it was amazing that the governor of the CBN then, who was supposed to know the facts, was preoccupied with misleading the country by giving conflicting reports.
But the committee stated that all the agencies, which made presentations to it, agreed, after reconciliation, that $47 billion out of the $67 billion had been credited to the Federation Account, leaving only $20 billion yet to be accounted for. Part of the outstanding $20 billion was the $5.254 billion spent on subsidy for Premium Motor Spirit by the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, which was covered by the Appropriation Acts of 2012 and 2013, the Senate Committee said.
It added that the $3.512 billion spent for kerosene subsidy as certified by PPPRA for the period January 2012 to July 2013 was still part of the $20 billion.
But the subtle indictment of relevant National Assembly committees was not lost on its Chairman, Senate President David Mark, who looked for the whip he should have used a long time ago, and lashed his colleagues.
He also did not spare the Emir, even though he was political enough not to want to hurt the sensibilities of the Kanawa nation, by not making any direct reference to his office or person, but it was obvious he was referring to him when he hinted at rumour mongers.
His words: “At the inception of the seventh Senate, I did say emphatically that there is no issue in this country that we cannot discuss as respected and distinguished senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. If we have the courage to set up a committee, nothing will stop us from taking the report of that committee and nothing will be swept under the carpet in this red chamber.
“I think what is glaring from this report is that we are all guilty. If the committees expected to carry out oversight functions on the NNPC were doing their job very well, we wouldn’t have needed the governor of Central Bank to ring an alarm bell before reacting. Whether the alarm is genuine or not, is another matter. The executive may have good reasons but the legislature obviously does not have reasons not to find out. Let me appeal to the various committees to endeavour to do their work.
“Facts are different from rumours and what we have before us are the facts based on the interview conducted by the committee on public hearing and on all the documents that they could put together. One thing is very obvious, due process has not been followed and they have stated so very clearly.
“On the issue of subsidy, I want to appeal that we should not pit ourselves against the public opinion. If subsidy has to be removed, there must be public enlightenment and education so that facts would be made available to the people and then public opinion at the end of the day will count.
“If we sit here now and say remove subsidy, I think those who are benefitting from subsidy are very powerful and tomorrow they would influence media reports and twist it to create an impression that the Senate is anti-people.
“If the subsidy has to go, I don’t have problems with that but let us sensitise the people over a very long period of time so that everybody will be carried along and everybody will be on board and we then can take a final decision on the issue of subsidy because the recommendations are far- reaching.”
Mark spoke well. He hit the bull in the eye, but it should be added that when federal lawmakers, who are part of the Federal Government fail to do their jobs, and rather run around the corridors of Ministries, Department, and Agencies, MDAs, to curry favours, they leave everyone in government, especially themselves, culpable when men with diarrhoea of the mouth, like Sanusi, speak.

100 Days After: President Jonathan Finally Meets Parents Of Chibok Girls(Photos)

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday met with parents of the girls abducted from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14 by Boko Haram insurgents.
Journalists were barred from the meeting which took place inside the Banquet Room of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, exactly 99 days after the girls were forcibly taken away from their school hostel at night .
The Presidency had in a statement last week promised that the meeting would be “open to the Nigerian and international media for coverage.”
But our correspondent gathered from a source at the meeting that some of the 51 girls, who escaped from their captors wept as they narrated their ordeal to Jonathan.
He said that the girls appealed to the President to expedite action and ensure that their colleagues who are still in captivity are rescued on time.
The source added, “The girls narrated how they jumped out of moving vehicles on the night of their abduction.
“They said they ran into the bush without any knowledge of where they were and where they were heading for.
“The girls said they trekked cautiously inside the thick bush up until daybreak before they saw some Fulani men who offered to assist them because they were still in their school uniforms.
“They said they were moved on motorcycles by the Fulani men who assisted them.”
Our source added that four other girls also told the President that they escaped when they went to fetch water from a stream.
According to him, the girls who said they were five as of the time of their escape, regretted that they could not locate one of them who fled in another direction.
He said, “They told the President that they managed to escape when they went to fetch water from a stream.
“They said they were being guided by two men, that at a point, five of them managed to escape. Four of them went in the same direction while one went in another direction. They do not know the whereabouts of the fifth girl who went in another direction.”

He added that many at the meeting, especially women, shed tears when the girls started pleading with the President to do everything within his powers to ensure that their colleagues were rescued.
The meeting was also attended by the President of the Senate, David Mark ; Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima; his Bauchi State counterpart, Isa Yuguda; some members of the Federal Executive Council, security chiefs, the principal of the GSS, opinion and community leaders from Chibok.

The 51 escaped girls, their parents and others were conveyed to and fro the venue of the meeting in four red luxury buses belonging to the Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company Limited amid tight security provided by a combined team of men of the Department of State Service and policemen.
The security operatives shielded them from journalists before and after the meeting that lasted about three hours.

Anambra to close 486 centres of exam magic
BY VINCENT UJUMADU
AWKA—NO fewer than 486 centres of examination magic in Anambra State are to be shut down as part of measures to curb examination malpractices in the education sector, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, has said.
Speaking at the 10th anniversary of St. Joseph’s Academic Award for 2014, the commissioner observed that the miracle centres had been aiding and abating examination malpractices, especially during West African School Certificate Examinations, WASC, and National Examination Council, NECO, examinations.
According to her, the decision to shut down the magic centres became necessary due to the manner their operators have fashioned them to swindle unsuspecting, desperate candidates.
She said: “We have govern-ment and approved private schools that are saddled with the responsibility of training our children to become functional members of our society.”

SAM Nda- Isaiah, who until recently resigned his position as the Publisher of Leadership Newspapers, in this interview, wants all democratic arsenals to be deployed towards ensuring that President Goodluck Jonathan does not continue till 2019.
Nda-Isaiah’s grouse is hinged on his believe that the perceived incompetence of the administration, is responsible for the current disorderly state of the nation. He also says his decision to run for the presidency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was informed by the desire to arrest Nigeria’s descent to doom. Excerpts:

SAM Nda- Isaiah
YOUR decision to run for the presidency has attracted mixed reactions. In the mind of some people, you are probably acting out a script while others don’t consider you a serious aspirant. Are you really serious about running?
I don’t think any body will say so. Maybe some people said so at the beginning but by now,I think it has become very clear to those people. Whose script are my acting? I am glad that you read my articles and I am sure that you and many of those who know me, understand my passion for this country and my desire to see it work.
I don’t need to act a script. Before deciding to run, l had a good job which I was enjoying. I have always said that it is a better paying job than the presidency.
Running for the presidency is not something I jumped into without giving it a serious thought. It is not a job to be enjoyed. It does not make sense to say that I am acting a script. I think some people always judge by their standards. If I did not see a path to victory, I would not waste my time by getting involved in the process. I had a job that I was enjoying and l believe it pays better than the presidency. The presidency appears lucrative for those who want to steal public funds.
Two prominent leaders in your party, Bola Tinubu and Gen Mohammadu Buhari, rtd, are being touted as possible presidential candidates. Don’t you think that their rumored ambition might affect your chances?
Buhari has not said that he will contest even though that it is most likely that he will. For Asiwaju, there was a rumour that he will contest but that has died down. Every body has a strategy. I have the one that will give me victory. I think that every body that intends to contest in the APC should have his own strategy.
I don’t think that anybody will be a threat to anyone. I think that anybody that will win would be someone with superior advantages because there is going to be primaries. It is not as if somebody is going to be imposed on the party. And if there is going to be consensus, it is going to be a real consensus. Such consensus will have the blessing of everyone.
Would you support Buhari if he the consensus favours him?
By the constitution of the party, even if there will be a consensus, there will still be primaries. Consensus does not overrule primaries. I am in this race to win. So far I am the only person who has declared publicly and I don’t think I will be the only person ultimately. And I am doing all I need to ensure that we win.
Would you decamp if you lose out in the party selection?
A real consensus is a situation where everyone has agreed on one person. And it is still open to be contested by a few aspirants who may not agree with consensus. Those candidates will still go ahead and contest in the primaries. I was in CPC before it joined other parties to form the APC. I have never jumped the ship. I cannot leave my party for another one because of desperation for power.
Everybody in the APC has agreed on the need to step careful when choosing our presidential candidate because Nigerians are watching us. APC is not the defunct CPC, ACN or ANPP where one powerful person can impose candidates on the party. Nobody is big enough to impose candidates on the APC.
So nobody has been imposed on the party. People are free to strategise on who to be their running mate. It is all part of the strategies that I told you about. I will not be telling you my own strategy.
What is your plan to revive Nigeria?
We intend to start afresh as a nation because every thing is wrong. This is not how to run a nation. Our message is on two legs. Unity of the nation has to come first.
Nigerians have to come together and act as one strong indivisible nation if we intend to make progress. If we intend to move from where we are now to a better future, we must do that as one strong indivisible nation. Countries that are better than us did that to get to where they are now.
Indivisible nation
It is sad that we see ourselves as northerners, southerners, Christians, Muslims, Pentecostals or Catholics.
We are too divided in this country. We can’t continue like that as a nation. The division is happening because the leaders want it to happen. To unite this country is easy. You don’t need a budget to unite this country. All you need is to be sincere and ensure justice and fairness for all. If as president, you treat the nation the way you treat your family, we will be united. But that is not how Nigeria is being run.
You don’t become desperate for power at the expense of the future of the nation. Ultimately, it will backfire. Our second message is on security. I would not have added this to what we intend to do if not that the security situation has become so bad. The primary function of any president is to secure the lives of his people.
Whether you are a democrat or a monarch the first job of any leader is to secure his people. The leader that we have now has failed. It is not difficult to achieve.
SAM Nda- Isaiah
SAM Nda- Isaiah
Don’t forget that our police men and security forces used to be adjudged as one of the best in the world in those days when we used to go for peacekeeping. But corruption has changed it all. When you send two hundred guns without bullets to four hundred soldiers, what do you expect? The state governments now get fifty percent of their monthly allocations instead of hundred because the money that would be made has all been stolen today. So there is no money to do any thing.
There was a time that Fashola used to give a billion Naira yearly to the police, but that is no longer done. Other state governments also contributed to their state police commands even though there is no state police but many of them cant be able to do that any more because they get only fifty percent of their allocation. That is also an impeachable offense.
Some governors have gone to court several times but nothing came out of it. As long as you tackle corruption as the president, you will have money to carry out developmental functions. As we speak now there is no money to do anything.
In the past we used to send our troops for peace keeping in African countries, now Ghana has said that they would be gracious to send us troops to fight Boko Haram. That is an insult. We are the giant of Africa and should be strong enough to protect ourselves and other African nations. Nigeria is not a small country, so we should not belittle the country because of our incompetence and corruption.
Your party has been having serious reverses in Ekiti, Adamawa and now Nasarawa. Is there any problem with the party?
Somebody decided to take the law into his hands by bribing the House of Assembly members with $300,000 each. The alleged offense of Nyako was committed five years ago when he was still in PDP. The president should be asked why he thinks it is possible to run a state like this.
Knowing the history
I keep saying that the president has to be careful. This is Nigeria, and if you know the history very well you will know that you don’t just take the people for a ride. If you think that you can do something and say that you are not the one, you will not go free in Nigeria. Many APC governors have been penciled down for impeachment.
One thing that is clear to me is that no matter what Jonathan does, it is not possible to continue in the state that we are now. We can’t continue in this state of disorder, insecurity, corruption and theft beyond 2015.
Nigerians are going to rescue themselves, the president should not think that he will do all these and continue till 2019. Nigerians will rescue their country. It is not the APC that should be asked about the impeachment.
If you don’t emerge as the candidate, what happens?
We intend to win. Wait and see our strategies. We are not planning for failure, because we are sure of victory. The APC is not going to anoint any candidate. We will conduct our primaries.
The APC is not like the PDP where Jonathan will decide not to conduct primaries. The APC is the most democratic party in Nigeria today. We know what is happening in the PDP.
All the governors that decamped from the PDP did that because they knew there was no equity and justice in the PDP. They are here because they know there will be fairness even though the President wants to impeach every body. Maybe the controversial twenty billion dollars was enmarked for the purpose of sponsoring impeachments. They are using corruption to fight alleged corruption.

Doctor strike paralyses healthcare, commercial activities
As strike by doctors in government-owned hospitals enters its third week yesterday, medical and commercial activities are paralysed in hospitals within and around government hospitals in the FCT.
Doctor-strike1
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the NMA embarked on an indefinite strike on July 1, following government’s failure to meet its demands.
A NAN correspondent who visited the National Hospital Abuja, Wuse General Hospital and Federal Staff Hospital, Jabi, observed that the nurses, pharmacists and lab scientists were at their duty posts doing nothing as there were no patients to attend to.
Also commercial activities around the hospitals such as food vendors and recharges cards sellers complained of low patronage.
At the Federal Staff Hospital, Jabi, a lab attendant, who did not want his name mentioned, said: “If you come to the lab on a normal day there is usually a crowd here, but as you can see the place is empty.”
At the National Hospital, Abuja, a Pharmacist, Kilani Jelili, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, said that number of patients had reduced as a result of the strike.
“Though there are few patients in the wards, we really do not have outpatients as you can see patient traffic is very low.
“Other health workers are all at their duty posts but there is little they can do, the hospital cannot function optimally.’’
Commenting on the strike, Jelili said that doctors had a right to press home their demands but not at the detriment of other health workers and the patients.
“Every association has a right to demand for certain things but doctors should fight for what is theirs only and not concern themselves with what they think other health workers should or should not get, ‘’ Jelili said.
Some food vendors who spoke to NAN said that the strike had affected their businesses as they recorded low patronage.
A corn seller outside the Wuse General Hospital, Ladi Solomon said, “we do not have customers because people are not coming to the hospital as before. Since morning I have sold only N300.’’
Emeka, a recharge card vendor at the National Hospital, said business had been slow for him, adding that the bulk of his customers were people who usually came to the hospital.
An Abuja resident, Ms Foluke Ipaye, also spoke on how the strike had affected her.
“I was hit by malaria fever. I had to go to the neighborhood pharmacy to get drugs because I cannot afford to go to a private hospital.
“ The poor people are really suffering, the government and the doctors should call off this strike, it is not fair at all, people are dying.’’
NAN reports that the NMA demands include a 24-point request for the appointment of four deputy chairmen, Medical Advisory Committee for Teaching Hospitals and establishment of three Federal Medical Centres in the country.
Others are the appointment of only medical doctors as Chief Medical Directors, relativity in the health sector, skipping of Grade Level 12 for medical and dental practitioners and reintegration of its members into the IPPIS platform.
It also demanded for increase in hazard and specialist allowances, budget for residency training, speedy passage of the health bill, appointment of a Surgeon-General of the Federation and universal health coverage, among others. (NAN)

ASUP Calls off Strike......
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) has called off the 10 month old strike and has ordered all polytechnics nationwide to resume on Tuesday, 15th July, 2014.
The ASUP strike was called off at the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the union held in Abuja, following an agreement reached by the ASUP management and the new minister for education 2 days ago.
All polytechnic students are by this notice advised to get ready to resume school ASAP.
The ASUP leader said: “The decision to call off the strike is in consonance with the demand of the new Minister of Education, Alhaji Abrahim Shekarau, to allow him study our demands.
“All ASUP is asking for is that government makes commitment on when and how the issues will be resolved.” He did not state whether the Federal Government has however made any commitment before the suspension of the strike.
ASUP went on the strike on October 4, 2013 to press the Federal Government to accede to its 13-point demands which include the release of the White Paper on the Visitation to Federal Polytechnics.

Job, More Jobs.......
CHANGES at the Central Bank of Nigeria since Godwin Emefiele resumed as Governor have sent signals that he intends to accomplish his vision of “the model Central Bank delivering price and financial system stability and promoting sustainable economic development”’.
The vision is inspired by an understanding of the multiple mandates of CBN to pursue price and financial system stability and provide complementary developmental functions by creating opportunities for Nigerians to live better and more fulfiled lives, through policies that enhance job creation.
Rather than being competing goals, as some may argue, they are complementary. In fact, price stability can rarely be adjudged a goal in itself without the ultimate objective of improvement in the quality of life.
CBN Monetary Policy Committee tended to focus on price stability to the neglect of job creation and the general welfare of the Nigerians. In its pursuit of low inflation, CBN, for three years, starved the economy of loanable funds by its tight monetary policy.
The continuous withdrawal of funds from the system jacked up interest rates and made credit inaccessible to small and medium enterprises, which ordinarily should be the hub for economic growth. Nigeria’s monetary policy rate is currently 12 per cent.
It is the barometer for bank lending rates that range between 18-24 per cent. The real sector cannot borrow from banks at these rates.
Maku tasks state govts on full digital broadcasting
By Princewill Ekwujuru
ABUJA—TheMinister of Information, Labaran Maku has called on state governments to prepare for full digital migration come October 31, as Federal Government considers floating second signal distributor.
The Minister made this assertion as a guest of honour at the 41st Annual General Meeting/Election of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria, AAAN, in Abuja.
His words: “What state governments need do is to prepare for the migration.
“It is just contents in stations that they require, they don’t need those big transmitters. Between now and October 31, we need to switch on the various cities to the platform.”
Maku confirmed that the Digital team is working and that the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, is also working.
Apapa-Oshodi Expressway: Fashola orders LASTMA, Taskforce to manage traffic
BY MONSUR OLOWOOPEJO
LAGOS—Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State yesterday directed the officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA and Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences (Enforcement Unit) to manage the traffic gridlock in Apapa.
Fashola, who spoke after inspecting the level of traffic on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and the ports, said the state would work with all stakeholders to ensure that normalcy returns to the Apapa central Business District, CBD.
According to him, “The state government will look into the matters concerning the 51 hectares of land raised by the transport unions. But in the meantime, we will keep our men here-LASTMA, Taskforce and others to manage the traffic; to ensure that business activities can thrive again.”
The governor had last week assured the residents of improved traffic in another seven days.
The governor said since last week Sunday and today (yesterday) we have made some progress. We have established one-lane compliance on Creek road and access to the ports.

File: Apapa Oshodi road completely shut down
He blamed the traffic gridlock on lack of proper management of oil distribution and ports activities, saying “I believe that everyone has a role to play. Even the transporters have their own role in addressing this issue. The state is an orphan under the country’s federal structure.
That was why we have always taking our destiny into our own hands.
”The entire problem they (Federal Government) has created, we have ended up solving them. But we need your (Transport unions) cooperation as well. We need to do business with conscience and to think about people who live here and are not gaining any money from here.”
”The entire problem they (Federal Government) has created, we have ended up solving them. But we need your (Transport unions) cooperation as well. We need to do business with conscience and to think about people who live here and are not gaining any money from here.”
Fashola however took a swipe at the Federal Government over what he described as ‘mismanagement’ of the entire activities in Apapa CBD, “I wonder why everything is falling into pieces under this Federal Government.”

The governor lamented that mismanagement on the part of the central government has paralyzed activities in Apapa Industrial Estate and has forced businesses to relocate from the axis.
He noted that the management of Apapa Ports and the industrial Estate was one of the oldest ports and the first industrial estate in the country. But rather than improve, things are getting worse.

UNILAG student shot in the head by unidentified gunmen..(DETAILS)

A student was reportedly shot in the head by unidentified gunmen on Monday at the King Jaja Hall area of the University of Lagos, Lagos State.
From Punch
The student who was identified as Sapara, a final year student of Philosophy, had his face covered in blood after a bullet was said to have scraped the side of his head.
He was subsequently taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, and official report had it that he was in stable condition.
The incident however led to chaos as students were seen running in different directions after the gunshot was heard.
Eyewitnesses say they saw a car speed off after the shooting, noting that the perpetrators might have carried out the attack from there.
Speaking in an interview with our correspondent, the Dean of Students’ Affairs of the University, Prof. Olukayode Amund, confirmed that Sapara was indeed shot and currently recuperating at LUTH.
He stated that investigations had begun to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack, after which requisite actions would be taken.
He said, “The events surrounding the incident are still unknown and by the time we conclude our investigation, the university authority will take the necessary and appropriate action. Our security operatives are working very hard to unravel the mystery and whoever is responsible will be held to account.”
When asked whether the attack was carried out by cultists, Amund noted that though it was not yet confirmed, it was a likely possibility.
According to him, only cultists are known to carry out operations of this nature.
And although normal day-to-day activities went on at the university on Tuesday as students went about writing their ongoing examinations, some are weary that reprisal actions could take place.
In January, unconfirmed reports had it that a student was axed at the New Hall axis of the campus.
Responding to this, Amund said the university was working with the police to find useful leads
Bomb scare: FG beefs up security at Lagos airport........
By LAWANI MIKAIRU & DANIEL ETEGHE
LAGOS—Security agencies, including the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, Nigerian Police, Nigerian Air Force and security agents of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Custom Agents, ANCLA, yesterday intensified security checks at the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company, NAHCO axis of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Following a report that Al-Qaeda and its affiliates may bomb airlines travelling to the United States and other destinations through mobile phones or laptops, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, on Monday, ordered its Aviation Security, AVSEC, to direct passengers to switch on their electronic gadgets before security screening at the airports.
This is to enable security operatives to determine genuine mobile phones, laptops and others that could be used as bomb carriers.
Vanguard observed that the situation led to a heavy traffic gridlock along the airport, Ikeja road causing motorists and commuters to be on queues for hours.
According to Vanguard’s checks, before any person could be allowed into the airport premises at the NAHCO axis, he or she must present an identification card to prove that he or she was an authentic worker at the airport.
Also, vehicles were screened before they could enter the airport while at the SkyWay Aviation Handling Company, SAHCOL, security agents were seen using anti-bomb detector to screen cars before they were allowed into the company’s premises.
The situation however led those without permission to enter the premises to be stranded at the gate of NAHCO.
Speaking, an agent with SAHCOL, Mr. James Chigozie, said the screening was to ensure that touts were prevented from accessing the airport, stressing that such screening was carried out to sanitise the airport environment.
Mr. Chigozie added that before an agent or anybody that worked at NAHCO axis of the airport got into the airport premises, an identification card must be presented to the security officials as those without any official duty at the airport were chased away, saying “I think the main reason for the check is just to prevent touting at the airport as people who don’t have anything doing at the airport are prevented from going into the airport premises.”
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer ,PPRO, at the airport Mr. Dennis Ifijen, said that he was in a meeting and could not comment.
Also a text message sent to the General Manager Public Affairs, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati, to confirm the situation at the airport, was not replied at the time of this report.
Displaying His Virtues And Perfections…. ·
WEDNESDAY 09 ·
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light (1 Peter 2:9).

Our opening verse isn’t a promise, but a statement of fact and instruction. Reading it in the Amplified version is even more inspiring: "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light." This is the purpose for which God has called you: you’re called to display the virtues and perfections of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvellous light!
Humility is a virtue; boldness is a virtue; faith and hope are virtues. These are examples of the virtues God has called you to manifest, not in the sweet by and by, but here on earth. Galatians 5:22-23 says, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." These are more virtues that God desires you to display to your world.
As new creations in Christ Jesus, we’re peculiar; we’re the first fruits; that means, the first and the best of God’s creatures: "Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures" (James 1:18). You’re the crowning glory, and the highest of everything God made.
God created you so He would manifest His beauty, holiness, grace, glory, excellence, and righteousness through you. He’s counting on you to bring the unconverted to the knowledge of His saving power. He wants you to bring them to the light of His Word through the way you live, the things you do, and the words you speak. As you daily display His virtues and perfections, their hearts will turn towards Him to receive salvation.
Prayer
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has made me a wonder, and a vessel to show forth His wonderful deeds to my world. His beauty, excellence, glory, honour and splendour are manifest for the world to see through me, and many come to the brightness of my rising, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

How to end Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, by Alao Akala.......
Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, is former governor of Oyo State and strong member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In this interview he speaks on his life outside government House and the current security situation in the country and how to end the cycle of insurgency among other burning issues.
YOU have been out of office for some time now, how have you been coping?
I have been enjoying myself. I have time to myself. As a politician I
have time to think of the past and focus on the future. I don’t have any office work bothering me. Since I left office, I have less of responsibilities.
have time to think of the past and focus on the future. I don’t have any office work bothering me. Since I left office, I have less of responsibilities.
2015 is around the corner, what are you up to?
I am thinking of coming back, I don’t think anything is wrong with that. I am am giving it a very serious consideration and I will soon come back to the race. And my chances are very bright, considering my track records. They have tried me before, they are trying another person now, and if you do analysis or comparison between the two of us I will be rated higher than the other person.
You are quoted as saying without you PDP is dead in Oyo State is it true?
Let me put it this way; I don’t want to arrogate that to myself alone, but myself and my associates. Without them and me I don’t think PDP will exist in Oyo State because anybody in the party now can never know PDP more than me. I have seen it all in PDP. We started the party. I thank God am in charge.
The security situation of the country is becoming alarming, as an
ex-police officer what do you think should be done to arrest the situation?
Security should not be left in the hands of the federal government alone.
It is the responsibility of all. The current security situation in the country is the problem of all of us. Each state government should be responsible for whatever is happening in its domain. Nobody in Abuja would help govern Yobe, Adamawa or Borno State; it is the duty of the governors in the respective states to take charge and ensure that there is peace and stability in those places.
But at the federal level, the government should allow police to tackle the menace being posed to the nation’s security before deploying the army. If I were the government, I would not deploy the army first; the army will be a backup for the police. The police should face the insurgents first and not the army.
The army should come in at the request of the police. The police are more civil, and the people we are looking for are not in the army. There are trained police officers and men, who are very conversant with the task of mingling with the civil society and getting the information that is required to tackle the enemy. That is why they should allow the police to be in the fore front. They should equip the police the more and allow them to tackle insurgency, which is not a normal war that the army can fight. The army does not know those we are looking for, but the police are everywhere in the country, so the police know how to give on-the-spot-assessment if given the chance. Intelligence gathering is very important, and if the police are well equipped they would have been trained on how to combat these insurgents. During my time I had the opportunity of going to Jaji and I was trained alongside the army. I was trained on how to face and combat this type of insurgence. They trained us every year. I don’t know whether they are still doing it or not. They trained us on how to deal with this particular situation we are in now.
With due respect to the army, no matter how sophisticated the army is, this is not a war they can easily win. It is one that everybody has to participate in order for the nation to win.
What they should do is to make sure the police are well equipped to face the challenge. If you see when they started they first of all scared away the police. They are attacking police station all over the place just to scare them. And they allowed police to be scared by bringing in army, no!
They should have fortified the police by giving them more money and vital equipment to enable them to face these people. The police are more widespread in this country than the army. We have police post in every locality, but soldiers are not everywhere. If you remember, at the commencement of the civil war, there was what they called police action first, but when they felt the police could not deliver, they brought in the army.
Right now, there is a department in the police called CIB, Civil Intelligence Bureau. The CIB will gather intelligence report, which will not be sent to anywhere but used within the immediate environment and action taken immediately based on the intelligence gathered and analysed by the officers.
If the police are in charge, they would send intelligence officers to mingle with the areas they consider as Boko Haram black spots to be able to gather vital information in dealing with them. So, my suggestion is that the police should be brought in; army should be in the background. Why we have mobile policemen is because of this type of situation, MOPOL is a sort of para-military and they are well armed and well trained to face this type of a threat to the society.
Have you ever advise the government on this?
No! No, because have not had the opportunity doing such. There was no effective way of communicating such to the government. You see there is a standard way of carrying over the operation of the police to the army.
I have not been able to see where the police will say they are not able to combat a situation and they transfer it to the army. All the information is from the police and again the army is talking too much. I was involved in Maitasine in 1980. Although we knew where they were, we could not enter and we suffered a lot of causalities. It was at that point that the military cordoned off the area and within some hours they were able to subdue the Maitasine fighters because they knew who they were going to fight and we knew their entry and exit points.
These Boko Haram insurgents are mobile and it is difficult to pinpoint their exit or entry point. If you approach them from the North, they will exit from the East and when they are moving, they do so in trickles and not enmass like the way they were able to identify them in Abia. My thinking is that the police are trained to dialogue while the military is trained to fight and kill.
So, what exactly should be done now? What advice do you give to the police authorities?
They should give more money to the police to be able to do their work effectively. I believe that if they give the police half of the money given to army, the police would do a very good
job. Why we had to invite the military against Maitasine was because they were not using guns but bows and arrows, which made it possible for them to target anyone anywhere they chose to attack. In fact, one could be targeted anywhere. In the present circumstance, I believe that there is a Divisional Police Station in Chibok and that they can detect the movement of people and take action against the insurgents.
The insurgents are wearing army uniform not police uniform. I am sure the police would have detected who is a police officer
and who is not. If you are not in my division and you are in police uniform and I see you, you will explain to me why you are in police uniform, but army formations are far apart and it is a bit difficult to identify who is not a real soldier.
I want to suggest the full involvement of the police in fighting the insurgents while the army is brought in only when the police feel it is necessary to do so.
But the police, particularly, the Mobile Police, should be deployed to assist in the fight because this insurgent is not a conventional war that the army can easily win.
