YOUTH AND FOOTBALL
‘I’m a die-hard arsenal fan, I can forfeit anything, be it food, church, exam, party, anything, just to catch an arsenal match’. Those were the words of a very good friend of mine, he loves arsenal more than anything.
The love Nigerians youths has for football, especially club football cannot be over-emphasized. The passion can be clearly seen, even Papas are coming into the party. The English Premier League (EPL) and the Spanish League (La Liga) have occupied the minds of many, all what we think as youth is how to watch these leagues week in week out. Anywhere you see 2, 3, 4 or more persons particularly the youths arguing, shouting, sweating, they are arguing football. Regular topics are; my club is better than yours, Messi is better than Ronaldo, Mourinho is the best coach in the world, Manchester United does a lot of Match fixing (popularly known as PDP), these and more are the likely cause of any argument.
Taking myself for example, I’m die-hard Chelsea fan. I love watching Chelsea play; I just can’t wait to watch them, especially with Fernando Torres now in the team. But mine hasn’t gone to the extent that I will forfeit my exam, because a club named Chelsea has a match. But that is not to dispute the fact that, the love of Chelsea has occupied my heart.
I remember 2008 champions’ league final in Moscow. The drama that happened before and after the match that day is still fresh in my memory. A lot of crazy things happened, even some people lost their lives, some lost properties, some lost lot of money, some were injured and negative stuffs like that were not scare that day.
A man bought a cow and painted it blue. Before the match was played, the cow was killed. There was lot of meat to eat that day. In other places, music rent the air, lot of dancing and drinking, enjoyment galore. Eventually, Chelsea lost the match. It was reported that some people died.
The just concluded 2011/2012 champions league won by Chelsea, it was reported that some Chelsea fans due to happiness clashed with Security men when celebrating Chelsea’s victory, some of them got seriously injured, this happened in Ebonyi.
All these craze for football is getting out of hand; it is turning into something else. Football is a sport full of passion we all know that, but football is a game to be enjoyed and for entertainment. Fighting ourselves is something uncalled for; let’s support our clubs with all sense of humour.
