Chapter of the organized labor in Ekiti has urged their counterparts in Abuja to file a court action against the National Assembly. Aluko and Kolawle Olaiya, chairman of Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) respectively deliberated on this topic on Tuesday, stating that such a measure will be prejudicial to the welfare of workers. Olaiya said taking into consideration Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, he employed trade centers to work against this evolution by the Assembly.
Speaking also, Aluko, who condemned the National Assembly’s move, remarked that it would be counterproductive for the federal lawmakers to resort to anti-workers policy in this crucial period, when every sector of the nation’s economy is looking for attention.
“This policy will spell doom for the trade union movement and for our democracy because the labor plays critical roles in the legal transfer of the dividends of democracy to Nigerian citizens. I desire to point out that some provinces are yet to abide by with the N18, 000 National Minimum Wage despite that it was along the exclusive list. This is an exploitative move against labor and we will refuse it. The National Assembly must be suspicious of the fact that it is in their own interest as well to protect the rights of labor as citizens of the country for sustainable peace. But a position whereby the land is pulled in to see the industrial crisis every day, may derail governance and that is where the policy will take us to,” Aluko said.
